Definition: An intense feeling of deep affection for someone; a great interest and pleasure in something.
Relating to the Bible, this is love for God our Father through Jesus Christ and love for our neighbour.
Categories of love:
Eros: Romantic love based on physical attraction. As disciples of Jesus Christ, this type of love must exist within the context of a committed marriage relationship where honouring and cherishing our spouse and seeking to build a solid and lasting bond is prioritized by both husband and wife. (Proverbs 5:18-19)
Philia/Phileo: “Brotherly love” based on affection towards family or friends, whose values and respect for each other are jointly identical. (John 21:15-19)
Storge: Derived from the word “philostorgos”, which means tender love. It is based on natural affection and is often used to describe the love between family members, especially between parents and children. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are instructed to honour our parents and care for our families. (1 Timothy 5:8).
Agape: The ultimate form of love, often described as an unconditional or Godly love that is selfless and sacrificial. Agape is the kind of love that God has for us and the love we are called to have for God and one another. (John 3:16)
Prayer focus:
Thank God for the new year and his love for you. Remember what he did for you in 2024 and before. Psalm 103: 1-4
